Guidelines for flags

Hoisting and lowering of the flag
* The flag should be lifted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.
* The flag of the United States of America is saluted, or recognized by placing a hand over your heart, as it is hoisted and lowered.
* When lowered, the flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water or merchandise.
Manner of displaying the flag
* The Flag Code states it is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open.
* When a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
* The flag should not be shown on days when the weather is severe, except when an all-weather flag is displayed.
* The flag should be displayed vertically, whether indoors or out, and suspended so that its folds fall free as though the flag were staffed.
* When displayed in a window of a home or a place of business, the flag should be displayed in the same way; that is, with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street.
Storing and disposing of the flag
* The Flag Code does not require any specific method of storage, however, over time it has become tradition to fold the flag into a triangular shape like that of a three-corner hat, with only the blue union showing.
* When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner. The American Legion frequently conducts flag retirement ceremonies.
Flag etiquette was established to honor and pay tribute to our nation and its history. As such, certain uses of the American flag are considered disrespectful. The flag should never be:
* Displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
* Used as a drapery or for any other decoration.
* Carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.
* Used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying or delivering anything.
* The flag should never be used as apparel, bedding or drapery.
* Festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free.

State Flags

Missouri became the 24th state in the United States on August 10, 1821. The state was first obtained as a part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. It was later admitted as a state during the Missouri Compromise of 1820.
Missouri’s state flag was designed by Marie Elizabeth Watkins Oliver in 1913. The flag is rectangular with three horizontal stripes, which are red, white, and blue. They represent the state’s French heritage as they were part of the Louisiana Purchase, bought from France. The stripes also represent valor, justice, purity, and vigilance. In the center is a blue-banded circle surrounded by 24 stars, symbolizing the 24 states in the Union. Inside the circle are two grizzly bears, who represent bravery and strength. The bears are holding a shield which has a gold knight’s helmet sitting atop of it and 24 more stars. Inside the shield is the Missouri Coat of Arms, which is divided by three images. On the right side is a bald eagle grasping olive branches and arrows in its talons (these mean war and peace). On the left side is a grizzly bear on a red background and a crescent moon on a blue background.

ptsil_-00_front_illinois-embroidered-patchIllinois became the 21st US state on December 3rd, 1818. Illinois was founded by two French explorers, Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet in 1673. In 1679, French settlers arrived and established the first settlement of Cahokia. Great Britain later gained the area during the French and Indian Wars in 1763.
Illinois originally had a state flag in 1913 which chose Lucy Derwent’s submission of the Great Seal of the State of Illinois, which had been created in 1868, on a white background. The flag depicts a bald eagle, symbolizing the United States, perching itself on a rock while carrying a shield in its talons.
The flag was eventually redesigned in 1970 by a Mrs. Sanford Hutchinson. In the newer version, the name Illinois now reads underneath the eagle in blue. There is also ground around the rock the eagle sits on alongside a sea and a sun in the background. The ground by the rock represents the soil of Illinois.

Signs

You already know it’s important for your sign to express the right information to the right people in order to boost sales and brand awareness. Have you ever considered the influence that color choice can have on your potential customers? Much work has been done on determining the subtle effects that color can have on our psychological states. At American Heritage, our artist is knowledgeable in how to effectively use color to make your advertisement pop in the right ways. You can come to us with a concept, sketch or goal and the professionals working in our design services will turn your ideas into compelling signs and advertisements.
Check out these tips to help guide you when designing a personal logo or advertisement.
Consider your target audience

Age, gender, interests and nationality are just a few of the factors that determine how people react to color. Consider who is looking for your product when deciding on artwork for your signs and banners. Consider who your business targets, and why.
Think about your sign location

. It’s very important that your sign be visible no matter where you need it, but consider your advertising location as well. Some studies claim visibility is up to 40% higher with this combination.
Use the 5 color groups to provide the desired effect

People are strongly influenced by colors, which can subconsciously make us feel certain emotions or feel compelled to do certain things. Artists generally agree that there are five “color groups,” each with different effects on the brain.
Warm, bright colors (beige, yellow, orange, pink and red) are considered “friendly,” and may make people feel energetic, courageous and even hungry. These colors make objects seem larger and closer.
Cold, bright colors (lavender, silver and azure) feel modern, professional and clean; they’re great for products relating to health or cosmetics.
